ADDING VALUE: Six Hidden Ways to Increase Your Value
If you don't consistently, constantly add value to yourself, then your career will fizzle. That's why The Daily Machete dedicates so much time to adding value.
Look at your career as a plant and adding value as its fertilizer. Sure, your plant will grow a little without fertilizer, but when compared to other plants nourished by fertilizer, they have shorter life cycles and even appear stunted.
There are many obvious ways to add value to your career (education, for instance). But here are the six hidden ways to increase your value that many people don't know:
1) Take vacations. Listen to today's podcast about the power of vacations to find out just how much you need to take regular vacations.
2) Uni-task. If you're doing two or more things at the same time, then chances are that you you aren't doing any of them as well as if you devoted all of your focus to one at a time.
3) Sleep. Sure, you've got a job or job search, a family and/or significant other(s), working out, maybe you're taking some classes part time or working a second job, and - Wait a moment. Remember that your brain (meaning "you") can't function optimally when deprived of sleep.
4) Active rest. Working out, doing puzzles, recreational reading and socializing at civic clubs are all forms of active rest. These activities are the pauses that refresh and make us happier - thus better at what we do.
5) Food. Your brain and body can't function right if you're not eating properly. By reducing your junk food intake and increasing your unprocessed food consumption, your body and mind will become well-tuned machines.
6) Art. It's been a long held belief that art makes you smart. That includes music, theater, painting, sculpting and more. Art develops your creative self, which means more of your brain will be working. The more gray matter working, the more value you add to yourself.
