ADDING VALUE: Book Review: Internet Your Way to a New Job
You may be familiar with some of Doyle's work. She's the the About.com Guide to Job Searching. She's invested more than two decades to human resources, career development and job searching. In other words, Doyle has earned the stripes to write with authority on searching for work online - and it shows in her book.
Doyle starts with some foundation information in the first chapter: branding, how to create a brand, some of the best sites to brand yourself, what to include in your online profiles, etc. And, while this may seem like basic information, it's not. Many job seekers have don't fully understand these relatively new concepts so these topics are essential. Doyle also covers some extremely important aspects of modern job hunting, such as writing a blog, optimizing yourself and incorporating SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
And that's just the first chapter.
Networking online is also crucial and Doyle delves into that in the second chapter. She points out the benefits of networking and takes a retrospective look at what networking used to be. She also offers excellent advice on who to include, how to connect and how to use your network. And, because it's not enough to find jobs nowadays, but to be found, she offers advice on that as well.
But Chapter
4 - How to Job Search Online - is really the meat and potatoes of the book. It
covers everything from how to start an online search to developing a
job search plan. She examines how to get organized, the tools you need, and
following up. And she does it in content-packed detail.
She also looks at solid, mainstream topics like passive job seeking and how it compares to active job seeking. Again, this comes down to
being able to be found. She looks at how to get jobs to come to you. Doyle doesn't shy away from some of the more cutting edge (read as "controversial") topics, either - like video resumes and how to put them together. She
also looks at active job seeking vs. passive.
One of the genius parts of the book is the chapter on online job search management tools. Managing your contacts is often overlooked, so it's refreshing to see that she dedicated a full chapter to the topic. JibberJobber (a favorite here at The Daily Machete) is covered, as are options for email, calendars, documents.
Another often overlooked topic when looking for work is privacy. Here, Doyle is to be commended for dedicating an entire chapter to privacy and safety issues. She looks at how to set privacy settings, confidential job searching and how to avoid scams.
Be sure to get your hands on a copy of Internet Your Way to a New Job. It's one of those books that all job seekers should read and absorb so they can compete in the job market.
