ADDING VALUE: Eliminate Stress
Whether you're on the job or looking for one, chances are you have a fair bit of stress in your life. Finances, family, health and commitments all contribute to stress.
Stress can lead to a whole host of issues. First, stress can put you on edge and make you snap at those around you more quickly. Also, stress leads to desperation which leads to more stress which leads to over-the-counter ulcer medications (and prescription blood pressure meds, too).
You probably know that nothing good can come from bottling up stress. Here are a few quirky - yet highly effective - ways to relieve your stress:
Sky dive. Whether
you sky dive, bungee jump, plummet down the tracks on extreme roller
coaster, or engage in other things your life insurance rep would frown
upon, you'll probably be scared to death. That, believe it or not, is a
good thing - and a great way to reduce stress. The reason for this is
twofold: 1) you'll scream in fear; and 2) you'll probably laugh about
how you screamed afterwards. The fear will distract you from your
stress and put it in perspective. Screaming will help release a lot of
pent up stress. And your post-terror laughter will release even more.
Hike. Taking a regular walk is a great way to keep stress at bay. When you're really, REALLY
stressed out, however, a simple walk isn't going to cut it. You need
something a little more intense. Strap on your hiking boots and head
for the hills for a hike. Hiking is a great way to relieve a lot of
stress because of the intense stimulation. Your body, of course will be
stimulated (and taxed), but so will your mind. Becoming part of the
surroundings can be intense. The physical exercise will burn off steam
and the visual stimulation will take up too much room in your mind to
allow much stress to stay.
Sing. Don't worry if
you can't carry a tune in a bucket. Singing makes people happy - even
if they're tone deaf. Singing loud forces you to work at projecting
your voice. This is hard work - and a great way to blow off some
stress. Whether you sing along to your favorite songs or without
accompaniment, get into the lyrics - whether it's a Jethro Tull song or
one by Tiffany. The more you get into the lyrics - the more of yourself
you invest in the song - the more stress you'll relieve.
