WEEKEND EDITION: Book Review: "I'm On Facebook - Now What???"
Jason Alba is one busy guy.
You probably know Alba or have heard his name. He created JibberJobber a while back as a Customer Relationship Manager (CRM). His business plan seems simple: 1) get laid off; 2) keep track of networking contacts with a spreadsheet; 3) grow frustrated with said method; 4) develop a much better method of managing contacts; and 5) share with the world.
But he's not a one-hit wonder. Far from it. In addition to JibberJobber, Alba wrote a great book in 2007 entitled I'm on LinkedIn - Now What??? which was reviewed here on The Daily Machete. Others followed suit in recommending his book. In fact, I was at a seminar on networking recently where the facilitator held up a copy of Alba's book and suggested it should be mandatory reading for all job seekers. After all, Irrefutable Law of Unemployment states: "If you're not on LinkedIn.com, you're not really serious about networking."
The thing is, Alba is a wealth of information and he's written another book entitled "I'm On Facebook - Now What???" with co-authored with SocialOptimize.com CEO and Facebook guru Jesse Stay. It will be out soon (you'll hear about it on The Daily Machete when it does), and Alba was kind enough to forward an advanced copy for review.
Unless you've been living in a cave, you've heard of Facebook. Heck - many of you are probably be Facebook users. It's one of the fastest-growing social networking sites out there, with millions and millions of current users - and more joining every day. Alba and co-author Stay are quick to point out, however, that they didn't write "I'm On Facebook - Now What???" because Facebook is huge - they wrote it because it can be a tremendous tool for personal and professional networking.
There's a lot to like about "I'm on Facebook - Now What???" It's well-organized and provides screen shots as examples to illustrate the points Alba and Stay make. And, like Alba's LinkedIn book, "I'm on Facebook - Now What???" doesn't waste time or dwell on fluff. It's info-rich and well written. They provide handy nugget-sized sidebar tips which ride shotgun with the main text and have action items at the end of each chapter. The tips are as important as they are helpful. Thankfully, they didn't put the tips in parenthesis where they might be lost by readers. The action items correspond to the lessons in each chapter without merely repeating what you've just read. Rather the action items represent to-do lists of what you can do with the info you've read.
"I'm on Facebook - Now What???" covers a lot of ground, too. Alba and Stay start by showing novices how to get on Facebook, then show how one can get involved with the Facebook community, including how to connect with others one-on-one as well as in groups. The book also covers applications (how developing them can help your branding efforts and a few of the best apps available). Wisely, privacy issues are also addressed (with well thought out words of caution).
Chapter 6, however, on Your Facebook Strategy, is the heart and soul of the book. Here's where you learn to optimize your efforts (hey - how much time should you spend on Facebook anyway?). This chapter looks at how students and professionals can best use Facebook to help with tasks and projects, position yourself, learn from others, attract potential customers, and even unify your family. In this chapter, co-author Stay even gives a sample of what he does on Facebook on a typical day (it's a pretty impressive and very cool list).
"I'm On Facebook - Now What???" covers many other topics, as well, such as business use, things you shouldn't do, and additional resources.
This is an excellent read. "I'm on Facebook - Now What???" should be mandatory reading for everyone looking to build their personal and/or professional brand. And stay tuned to The Daily Machete for news on when it's available.
As mentioned earlier, Jason Alba's a busy guy. He's just completed his second book (this one with Jesse Stay) and built a go-to website in JibberJobber, one question remains: Does Alba ever sleep?
