RESUMES: Work Gaps (Supplemental)

In Friday's post, we looked at a couple techniques to address extended gaps in work. Earlier today, we suggested that a functional resume may be the best way to diminish any bad connotations from a long gap between jobs.

Another technique that some job seekers use is to list volunteer activities in their "employment" sections. Whether you decide to use a chronological or functional resume, this isn't advisable. Employers and recruiters alike will see this as misleading. And, if you do make it to an interview and are questioned about it - at which time you'll need to come clean - the interviewer will likely perceive you as dishonest.

Sometimes, however job seekers will list volunteer activities in their "employment" section and add "(Volunteer)" next to it. This is a somewhat touchy approach. Some employers and recruiters will appreciate it, while others - a majority - will not. Many employers and recruiters view volunteer activities as "spare time" activities and not "real" experience.
