NETWORKING: Book Review - "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" by Jason Alba
In today's first post, we addressed an incredibly valuable tool for job seekers - reverse engineering a network to make contact with someone you feel could be instrumental to your job search. We called this person the UC (ultimate contact) and looked at reaching the UC by way of introductions. One of the tools discussed, of course was LinkedIn.com.
If you haven't registered with LinkedIn, you should. If you're new to the site or still haven't grasped everything you can do with LinkedIn, then you should DEFINITELY get a copy of Jason Alba's book, "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" Alba is the founder of JibberJobber.com, an excellent career management tool.
As long mentioned here on The Daily Machete, if you're not on LinkedIn, you're not really networking. To that, we can add that if you haven't read "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???", you're probably not using LinkedIn to its full capacity.
Alba's book is well-organized, and he begins by explaining to novices what LinkedIn is and what it can do. This is a particularly valuable section for newbies. In the first 5 chapters (his "Getting Started") section, he leads rookies through the basics, such as starting a profile, tips on accounts and settings and even reaching out to make contacts. In his middle section, "Making It Work for You," Alba gets into the nitty gritty of recommendations, finding jobs through LinkedIn, joining LinkedIn groups and utilizing LinkedIn answers. This is the meat and potatoes of "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" It deserves to be read two or three times. He wraps it up by explaining LinkedIn "no-no's" and what's considered bad form by some users on the site.
Another "Albanian" strength - his clear, down-to-earth writing style - may also pose a challenge for the average reader. How can good writing pose a challenge? Simple: his words are too smooth, which can make his book a quick read. But breezing through "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" would be a disservice to readers. Despite being content-rich, Alba's writing style can lead you to believe you've absorbed everything upon first reading it. The best advice? Re-read every chapter. Take notes. Highlight passages if you need to.
Be sure to get a copy of "I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What???" sooner than later. Read it a couple times and keep it handy to reference. Your networking efforts - and your work search - will definitely improve.
