ADDING VALUE: How The Police Can Help You Add Value
By now, most know that 80's legends The Police are back together and touring. In fact, they are THE tour this summer.
And, to honor Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland (albeit tongue-in-cheek), here are a few lyrics by The Police to keep in mind while hunting for work:
"I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle." Sure, this song by The Police song is about being lost on a remote island and the futile activity of throwing a bottle into the ocean with a note inside, hoping someone will find the bottle, read the note and divine from whence it came, then organizing a rescue mission and finding the letter writer alive. But what job seeker hasn't felt that way? After all, aren't our resumes and cover letters sent in hopes that an employer will rescue us and offer employment? Just as the protagonist in Message In a Bottle
"Every step you take I'll be watching you." There's a fine line between being persistent and stalking. Unfortunately, the narrator in I'll Be Watching You crosses that line. Yes, you can feel the urgent love in Sting's voice, but the lyrics show the love is not returned. Nor, for that matter, are they likely to be returned, given the creepy message of the song. Likewise, job seekers should follow up with potential employers, but not to the point of crossing the line. Following up is good; stalking is bad.
King of Pain. This is a downright depressing song by The Police. Sting vocalizes the beaten down voice of a man who's accepting his life is painful. In short, he's fallen into despair. But then, what job seeker hasn't felt like the King of Pain (or queen)? Job seeking can prove to be frustrating. It's wise, however, to keep your spirits up so you don't fall into a pathetic despair like the narrator of this song by The Police doesn't give up hope, neither should you.
