NETWORKING: Digging Up Your Past
Summer is a great time to grow and nurture your network by digging up your past. NEXT TUESDAY: Be Pursued Check out last Tuesday's podcast on polarizing.
That's right - your past may have more influence on your future than you know.
We all lose touch with friends and family. During the summer, though, there are plenty of opportunities to rekindle those old ties - and build new ones. Check out these great, easy ways to dig up your past:
Graduations. You probably know how important it is to chat up the parents of your kids' friends at graduations, but don't neglect inviting some of the more influential members of your family to the graduation party. Chatting up long-lost high-powered relatives can provide a wealth of information relevant to your job search.
Weddings. funerals and family reunions. These are great places to shake the branches of your family tree, too. Weddings and family reunions are quite often held during the summer months. Make sure you RSVP affirmatively to every one you can possibly make - you're almost guaranteed to get serious face time with your well-connected kin. Funerals, unfortunately, can't be planned. They should, however, be attended. You can pay your respects, then, afterward, speak to your relatives.
School reunions. Don't pass up the chance to reconnect with your old classmates at reunions, either. Many business (and personal) relationships are forged while talking about old times. It's almost a given that some of your old chums have done well for themselves. Discuss your job search briefly and ask to speak with them a few days after the festivities end and everyone is back to their "real" lives.
IN THE CARAVAN: Build your network by digging up your past at graduations, weddings, funerals, and at family and school reunions.
