Q & A: Should I Go to Grad School?

Q: I've been bouncing around the job market since gratuating from college five years ago.  I figure that going to grad school is my only chance to get employed.  The problem is, I don't know what I want to get a masters in.  What are the hot grad school degrees that will get me hired when I'm done?

A: You haven't given much information, but from what you wrote, I would say hold off on investing the time and money in grad school.  It won't help.

That's not meant to sound harsh.  You just tend to be putting the cart before the horse

Rather than trying to mold yourself to what's currently "hot," you'll probably be better served to know specifically what masters degree you want.  The risk v. reward ratio is too high otherwise.  That is to say, it could have the opposite effect that what you are looking for.

Actually, the timing of your question couldn't be better.  Brazen Careerist Penelope Trunk had a post on her blog this week about the Five Situations When You Shouldn't Go to Graduate School.  Before you consider grad school any further, I encourage you to read that post.  In fact, I'm going to steer you to Penelope's post for your answer.

Grad school, after all, may not be the answer to getting your career out of neutral.

IN THE CARAVAN: Grad school won't solve your career woes.  Proceed with caution.
