NETWORKING: Speaking Clearly

We are judged by how we speak.  Speak incoherently and be thought a fool.  Speak well and be thought of as stellar.

Speaking clearly, therefore, is exceedingly important - particularly when looking for work.  Potential networking contacts are (justifiably) hesitant to refer those who can't speak well to those in their network.  Here are a few tips to help you sound like the pro that you are - and get the referrals to gigs you need:

Um...er...ah...  Vocal fillers can be killers if used continuously.  We've all used them from time to time and, so long as they're infrequently used, they don't hurt too much.  It's the overuse that causes problems. They are, after all, vocal evidence of brain burps and when overused, give the impression the speaker can't think well.  Good speakers are typically good thinkers - and get networking referrals.

Making points.  Ever listen to someone yammer on without making a point?  At some point, we all have.  And, if you're like most, then you probably look upon them as bores.  Again, this shows a lack of discipline in thinking and can hurt when mining for networking leads.  Those who get lost in what they're saying will get lost in the job hunt.

Word selection.  Speaking like a CEO to non-CEO people may make you sound like you're showing off.  Likewise, speaking like a hick to a group of professionals will make you sound like a hick - and keep you out of the running for networking leads.  Speak on the level of those you're speaking to for optimum effect.  If your vocabulary is large enough and you've had experience speaking to different income levels, though, it will eventually come naturally.
