Q & A: Publicizing Outside Endeavors

Q: I do a lot of things outside work.  I belong to an organization, I enter at least one bowling tournament per month and occasionally do some volunteer work.  I haven't mentioned this too much at work because I'm not sure if it's really such a good idea.  Should I mention my outside endeavors while I'm on the job?  And if so, how?

A: Wow! You really do have a lot of things going on!  Congrats on being so involved in your community and realizing fulfillment is up to each person individually!  Your network, as a result of your outside endeavors, has probably grown quite a bit, too.

For the most part, mentioning
outside endeavors at work is fine, so long as you don't go overboard and stay within company guidelines.

Trophies and plaques.  If you've won trophies from bowling or other
outside endeavors, it's usually okay to have one on your desk.  The key word in the last sentence is "one."  Using your desk or office as a trophy case will make it look like you're bragging.  They'll also take up to much space.  A nice, small trophy will show your involvement and show a little of your personality in a subdued manner.  Plaques are fine, too.  Like trophies from your outside endeavors, however, it's a good idea to only have one.

Raffles and donations.  Some companies have policies in place forbidding any fund raising activities.  If you're raising money for one of your charitable
outside endeavors, it's wise to abide by the policies.  Other companies allow it, but only during break times.  Here, it's a good idea to let people know you're soliciting for funds, but not to go desk-to-desk with your sponsor form.

Changing at work.   If you're involved in a sport and practice (or a game) starts shortly after work, then changing in your restroom before leaving is acceptable.  Managers who see their employees in their sports gear will usually take note and think you're a go-getter as a result.  It's a great way to not-so-casually show a little of your personality.

IN THE CARAVAN: Publicizing your outside endeavors at work is a good idea as long as it's subdued and adheres to company guidelines.
