NETWORKING: Revealing Outside Endeavors

Whether you're making new contacts or associating with those you already have, it's a wise idea to reveal some of your outside endeavors.

Why?

Very few with established networks want to network with those without a network of their own.  It's kind of like dating - who wants to date someone without any other prospects?  Networking without at least a small network smacks of bad networking, after all.  And that just gives networking a bad name.

Those with networks of their own, however, are more attractive to network with.  In this situation, both parties can share contacts in a more relaxed manor.

How can you show you have a solid network in place?  By revealing some of your outside endeavors.  Here are a few ways to reveal your outside involvements:

"Oh - then you probably know..."  The people you meet in your involvement in outside endeavors can help break the ice with new contacts.  Searching for common contacts is a common activity among the newly acquainted, after all.  Why? Because somehow, some way, either you or your new contact is Kevin Bacon

"I'm sorry I can't stay long.  Practice starts in an hour."  Statements like this add dimension to your personality and can help juice your networking efforts.  This statement, for instance, shows time management and commitment - two qualities your contacts will likely mention in conversation when talking about you.

"They're going to auction me off."  Some charities auction off bachelors (or bachelorettes).  Others "arrest" people who then must ask their contacts for donations in order make "bail."  Others, like The Daily Machete friend John Luce, take part in grueling bike journies for charities like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Mentioning your involvement in fund raising activities like these (and others) show you're active in the community and that you've got a good network already established.  Both make you more attractive to potential networking contacts.
