Q & A: Last Week of the Year Productivity

Q: What can I do between Christmas and New Year’s to land a job?  I had several interviews earlier this month that I thought went well, but I haven’t heard back from them yet.  I also have a lot of resumes circulating, but haven’t gotten any nibbles in the last week.  Any suggestions?

A:  It sounds like you’ve been doing a good job finding work.  Congratulations on landing several interviews!

There are many things you can do during the final week of the year to aid your work search.  Here are a few ideas:

    • Remember that first interviews between Christmas and New Year’s are rare, but it’s quite common to have follow-up interviews during this time.

    • Follow up with those whom you’ve interviewed.  If you get their voicemail (which you may), leave a professional yet friendly Holiday greeting and mention you’ll try back after January 1.

    • Read Wednesday’s “12 Online Gifts for Job Seekers” post.

    • Take advantage of Holiday networking activities.  Go to parties and get-togethers held by family, friends and every organization to which you belong (or are invited to attend).

    • Register with a couple more agencies or contract houses.  While many companies’ hiring managers may be out during the final week, most agencies and contract houses will gladly accept – and talk to – new people.  It’ll also help you practice some of your interviewing skills.

    • Enjoy the company of family and friends.  Take your mind off looking for work for awhile.  You’ve worked hard at finding a job and you deserve a couple days of fun!

IN THE CARAVAN: The last week of the year can prove quite productive, but take time to enjoy the season, as well.
