NETWORKING: Electronic Holiday Gift Exchanges

Regular readers of this blog (and our main site WildJobSafari.com) know the value of networking.  In fact, many of you have sent emails to say you’ve started – or increased – your cyber networking after reading this post on the topic.

In last Tuesday’s post, we discussed giving token gifts to your contacts.  But you can also exchange electronic Holiday gifts, as well (and best of all, they’re FREE!!!).  Here’s how:

LinkedIn.com recommendations.  If you’re not a member of LinkedIn.com yet, you should be (be sure to check out tomorrow’s post to see why!).  If you are a member, give recommendations to those in your network.  Valid recommendations boost members’ credibility.  And, by “officially” recommending a few contacts you’ve worked/collaborated with, you’ll raise yours, as well.

Blogroll exchange.  One benefit to having a work search-related blog (read this post for other reasons and this post for what to include), is being able to make your online networking more efficient.  Having a professional blog allows you to control your online identity and associate with those in similar professions or of similar mindsets.  Use the Google search bar on this page to find others like yourself.  Send them emails and post comments on their blogs.  Then put them on your blogroll and ask that they do the same.  You’ll find that both blogs will get more hits – giving both parties more positive visibility.

Give free info. I run job searches for clients every day and in the process, often dig up leads for other clients and contacts.  When I run across a lead my contacts might be interested in, I send them a quick email with a link to the posting(s) or the contact info of the hiring manager with whom I’ve spoken.  This has built a good deal of good cheer with my contacts – many of whom now send me job leads to pass on to others.

IN THE CARAVAN: Exchange electronic gifts with your contacts by recommending them on LinkedIn.com, exchanging links on each other’s blogs and emailing them free information.
